Uni Yr 2: Vitamin D Test Kit

Task: Design an ergonomic Vitamin D Test Kit, to reduce needle discomfort using semantic design

The Brief & Semantic Research:

Brief
Design the Vitamin D Test Kit, with a 2 piece cartridge body made of polymer and friction fitted together around the 4X80mm test strip. With a stainless steel lancet. Including details exposing the test strip through the top
component for, Blood drop, Buffer solution, and results window.

Semantic Board
Semantic design is an approach that focuses on adding a layer of meaning to the tools and features we use to help consumer needs. The Below images represent semantic improvements to reduce stress around using lancets in the test kit looking into soft and sharp forms

Ideation:
From the visual board, I investigated two directions to ideate test kits, looking into soft and sharp forms and single product and multiple component test kits.

Initial Prototyping:
From this I took the best received design in each direction to model, and test in a real environment. The Models allowed me to check form to see which is less stress inducing in form. Deciding that the soft curved form allowed the index finger to remain more relaxed when holding or using the product.

Refinement:

form development
Lancet form has been changed to be more needle shaped, to speed up clotting when blood has been drawn. Creating a magnetic lancet lid, to protect from unintentional use. Having a curved shape, dimensioned from hand and index finger anthropometrics, to promote a relaxed position for use. Choosing the test kit casing material, suited for injection moulding and housing the internal components.

Refinement:

prototyping
Testing the final form of the product to ensure comfort and stability when in use. Ensuring the needed test strip windows are in the correct position, as test strip is on a slight incline, as litmus paper has absorbing properties that could be affected.

Showing how the lancet, lid, and test strip sit in the product, as well as injection moulded details needed to attach the left and right casing together and hold the internal components. Showing the chosen Casing material and the dimensions for the left and right casing. Also adding the pipette used to drop the blood solution on the test strip

Key Features:
Form Semantics to reduce stress around needles, and during the test.
Product Colouration:       Soft Cyan: #ACDEE0    White: #000000

Stainless Steel lancet for blood resistance
magnetic Lancet Lid

Easy Disassembly for test redoing
Single Material Components for easy recycling at end of life
GA, Exploded and Detailed Drawings:
GA: Dimensions of product, showing how the parts assemble together and where parts are located in the main casing. Showing a mid section of the product
Exploded: Showing product assembly, and the component pieces
Detail Part Drawings: Showing the drafting, connecting pins, materials and manufacture details for the Left and Right test kit casings.
